Safety Is No Accident

You should be thinking about the things you’re not thinking about.

Where are the dangers in your business?

Whether you’ve got employees operating large machinery, executives driving about in traffic or a subcontractor about to tip a bucket of mop water, every business has its own unique set of dangers.

Even if it is not OSHA mandated or enforced by a labor union, it’s important to identify specific areas within your business where operations can be done more safely or where potential dangers could exist. Remember, the safest way to solve a problem is to prevent it in the first place.

When it comes to safety, don’t play it safe.

Complacency might not kill, but when it comes to maintaining safe practices in the workplace, it can certainly hurt. Make sure to have clear procedures that allow for proactive monitoring, reporting and management. Most importantly, take any concerns seriously and address them immediately. If you care about your employees, let them know by taking care of them. This way, not only CAN they still work for you, but they will WANT to.

How much thought have you put into the safety of your facilities? The handling of potentially hazardous materials? The processing of data? The policies you’ve established if someone is hurt on the job?

Having the right answers to these questions can be the difference between personal and professional success or potentially life-changing failures.

Safety isn’t expensive, it’s priceless.

The Usual Suspects

We all understand safety is important, but that doesn’t mean we always make it our first priority. That’s true in life as well as in business. Not only is it important, it’s the law.

All businesses are required to maintain a certain adherence to local and federal safety requirements, and these can sometimes be complex, paperwork-heavy, and challenging to monitor. Small businesses, in particular, that run as labors of love by their owner-operators, can find themselves in a heap of trouble if they neglect to put proper safety protocols in place.

Having constantly evolving safety procedures has always been a vital element to every business’s overall plan, but gone are the days of laminated safety sheets pinned to the brick wall at the back of the break room. Today’s modern businesses—and the staffs they employ—need and expect thoughtful safety protocols that address the wide range of threats they could face.

New Concerns for Modern Businesses

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we all started thinking about safety differently. What many of us thought was important in the workplace shifted. Some of the same concerns remain, but employees and customers now expect more from the businesses that are a part of their lives.

The global health crisis focused our attention on the wellness of our customers and employees. Safety protocols now must include how to address illness among staff, enhanced cleaning procedures, and the sort of personal medical decisions we didn’t usually associate with the workplace.

It can be a challenge to develop the right plan that is sensitive to both the needs of your business and the needs of the people who make that business valuable.

Luckily, there are people who can help with those solutions.
