The RIGHT Business Plan

You don’t just need a business plan—you need the RIGHT business plan!

So you’ve got the perfect idea for a sure-fire winning business that will make you famous and your bank account swell. Now what? Now’s the time to get moving on writing a business plan.

Most advisors agree that one of the first steps you should take to get your billion-dollar idea off the ground is to draw-up a business plan. Business plans are useful in a number of ways.

Why bother with business plans?

First, they solidify your ideas. Nothing shows the weakness of a plan like putting it on paper. When you outline your business plan, you can identify where the holes are and brainstorm solutions. Your first draft is a great place to add new ideas, new details, and new features, before the first bricks are laid or the first line of computer code is written.

Second, if your overall business strategy includes seeking investors or loans for anything, those people will want to see a business plan. Business plans show you’re serious. They show you’ve done some homework. If you were handing out money, you’d expect to see some evidence proving you’ve got a good chance to get it back. Banks and venture capitalists expect the same.

Those folks may have some suggestions for your business plan, and you shouldn’t ignore them. Sure, there are stories of mega-successful business owners who bucked the system and followed their hearts, but there are many more stories of success built through hard work, consideration, and revision.

Making the RIGHT business plan

It’s a good idea to look at business plans early in your process. You may even want to use the templates provided by the United States Small Business Administration to try some rough drafts, or assign yourself the project of writing out the business plan of a company you know and admire. That can be a helpful way of understanding the difference between a business that starts and a business that lasts. You definitely want to be the second kind!

But you don’t just need business plan, you need the RIGHT business plan, a document tailored for your type of venture, your type of working, and your type of audience. To get that right, you need a partner who understands not just business in general, but what makes YOUR business special.
